SEMA representatives talk with Congress about RPM Act

More than 115 representatives from the Specialty Equipment Market Association gathered in the nation’s capital to participate in SEMA’s 2017 Washington Rally, Wednesday, May 17. Racing business owners and industry leaders took to the halls of Congress to remind lawmakers of the cultural and economic importance of motorsports and the automotive specialty-equipment industry.

A top focus during the rally was H.R. 350/S.203, the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports (RPM Act) of 2017. The bipartisan bill would protect Americans’ right to modify street vehicles into dedicated racecars and the industry’s right to sell the parts that enable racers to compete.

The RPM Act now has 118 co-sponsors in the House and 29 co-sponsors in the Senate, and the number continues to grow. Members also talked to their lawmakers about other issues facing the specialty-equipment industry, including countering burdensome regulations, preventing higher ethanol content in gasoline and fighting counterfeit products.

The Tony Stewart Foundation announced that Jim Beam® Bourbon, the world's #1 bourbon, would sponsor the No. 77 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports entry in the 2017 Indianapolis 500. The entry, driven by British racing ace Jay Howard, will carry the iconic Jim Beam logo and imagery during the 101st running of the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing."

"It's really great to see Jim Beam return to the Indy 500, especially as a part of our Team One Cure program," said Howard. "To join a distinguished list of drivers who have had the opportunity to be associated with a brand like Jim Beam is really special to me.

“Our 2017 program continues to grow daily and bringing in big brands is really fundamental to the longevity of this effort with the Tony Stewart Foundation. This first year is simply definitely the start to a greater initiative, and I'm thrilled to welcome everyone from Beam Suntory to this family."

Howard will start in the middle of Row 7 in the 20th position for the Indianapolis 500, which will be contested on Sunday, May 28.

And the Agent must add, enjoy this Memorial Day weekend, but please don’t drink and drive. We want everyone to make it back when we return to duty on Tuesday, May 30.
