Scott McLean (blue car) starts in the left lane, makes a sharp turn to the right on two wheels (inset photo) and ends up in the same lane as Steve Ham.
The temperatures were sweltering at Australia’s Sydney Raceway and the track was in great shape, but some of the racers got a little more than they bargained for at the IHRA Thunder Summer Nationals. Among the damage was a couple of fires and a wing disintegrating on a solo pass.
DRO’s Australian correspondent, Jon Van Daal, explains it all at here. [01/31/18]
Rick Newport (near lane) gets the Sportsman Motorcycle win over Denny Alves at the Las Vegas LODRS final last year.
The JEGS NHRA SPORTSnationals returns to Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Ky., for the third season on Memorial Day weekend, for three days of intense racing action.
“We know the racers and their families are excited to head back to historic Beech Bend Raceway Park again in 2018,” said Scott Woodruff, director of media and drag racing, JEGS Automotive Inc. “JEGS is committed to the racers on and off the race track, making the JEGS SPORTSnationals better each year with input from our customers and friends has been a priority since day one.”
The event is set to take place May 25-27 and will once again feature sportsman racers from across the country with a purse of over $108,000 along with special bonus races and national event contingency payouts.
New for the 2018 event will be the addition of the Sportsman Motorcycle category to the slate of racing action. Also, both the Top Sportsman and Top Dragster categories will compete in a 32-car field to optimize the competition for racers and fans alike.
The racing action begins on Friday morning with qualifying runs. Super Stock, Stock, Super Gas, Super Street, and Super Comp along with Top Dragster, Top Sportsman, Comp Eliminator, and Sportsman Motorcycle will compete throughout the weekend.
Eliminations for all classes will be held on Sunday with National points at stake in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series including Comp, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Top Sportsman, and Top Dragster categories while Lucas Oil Divisional points will be awarded in Super Street and Sportsman Motorcycle. If you’re a fan of motorcycles or big tire or small tire cars and partying, the Memorial Day weekend will have just what you’re looking for. The Redneck Revival Outlaw Drags will be held at the eighth-mile Conesville (Iowa) Dragway.
And just a word of warning: Attendees must be 21 because there might be some drinking and nudity. Camping is available at this event, so the Agent must remind everyone that if you’re drinking, please don’t drive.
On Saturday, May 26, at high noon Oklahoma Street Outlaw Jackie Knox and his “Sonoma” truck will take on Iowa’s Pistol Pete and his “Virgil Cates” Opel. [01/31/18]
Mopar and Dodge//SRT have increased their commitment to Leah Pritchett’s Top Fuel team and renewed their support of Matt Hagan’s Funny Car. The brands will take primary placement on Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) driver Pritchett’s dragster at seven of 24 events on the 2018 NHRA schedule, more than triple from two races last season as primary sponsor. The brands will also share sponsorship of Pritchett with Pennzoil for two events.
“If you’ve ever been to an NHRA race, you can feel the energy and enthusiasm the crowd has for both the drivers and our Dodge performance machines,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Cars, Dodge//SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA North America. “That passionate NHRA fan base is very well aligned with our enthusiasts, so expanding our presence to three times the number of NHRA races this year really helps us connect with our customers where they live and breathe. And with the increased number of Drag Paks, supported by our SRT Engineering team, competing each week, the technology transfer from what we learn on the strip to what we are putting into our production cars – like the 840 horsepower Demon and 707 horsepower Hellcats – continues to grow at a rapid pace.” [01/31/18]
The brands will serve in a primary sponsorship role for 14 races during the 2018 season as Matt Hagan seeks his third career NHRA Funny Car title.
Hagan’s DSR teammates, Ron Capps, Jack Beckman and Tommy Johnson Jr., will also battle for the crown in Mopar HEMI®-engine-fueled Dodge Charger R/T Funny Cars.
The Mopar and Dodge//SRT brands will debut at the NHRA Winternationals — a massive 4,800-square-foot exhibit that combines each brand’s rig to form one of the largest displays on NHRA Manufacturers Midway.
The display rigs will be positioned head-to-head, joining fan-friendly exhibits and show vehicles together under one footprint. Also new for this year starting at the NHRA Gatornationals, an elevated viewing area atop the Dodge rig section of the combined display will give VIP fans the chance to get a unique aerial view of the midway and track not offered at any other display.
The crowd-favorite Challenger SRT Demon simulators will return, giving enthusiasts a virtual seat behind the wheel of the 840-horsepower, most powerful muscle car in history. Fans can also enter to win prizes, learn more about Mopar parts and accessories and meet their favorite NHRA stars in autograph session staged at the rig during each race. The new display will be present at 15 NHRA national events throughout the 2018 season. [01/31/18]
