Just Wondering...
With the increasing popularity of the NHRA Factory Stock Shootout with fans and racers, why not broaden the scope and add classes featuring cars most fans can actually relate to? Shouldn’t be too hard attract corporate sponsors for those classes. – Jeff Burk (jeffburk@dragracingonline.com) [08/01/19]
There will be a bit of testing and tuning going on tonight (Aug. 1) for this weekend’s event at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway outside of St. Louis where the Pacific Street Car Association will join with the Mid-West Pro Mod Series.
Keith Haney, owner of the MWPMS, recently sold his “Enigma” 2014 Camaro to a yet-to-be-disclosed buyer, then just last week unexpectedly transferred ownership of "Notorious," his nearly identical-appearing, dedicated Pro Mod entry to Texas racer Tony Strachan.
That left Haney with no car for the St. Louis event, so he asked the new owner of Enigma, who hadn’t yet picked up the car, if he could race it this weekend.
“And right away he said, 'Absolutely!'” Haney explained. “So Enigma is coming back out. I'll be driving a purpose-built radial car in the Mid-West Pro Mod Series, something that's never been done before."
Mel Roth’s PSCA will hold Street Car Super Nationals 6 at the track. Classes for this event in addition to Pro Mod, Top Sportsman and Top Dragster include X275, Limited Drag Radial, 6.0 Index, and two divisions of Jr. Dragsters. [08/01/19]
Anderson got his first win of the Swing at “Thunder Mountain” near Denver.
After a rough start to the season, Greg Anderson has come on strong, winning the last two Pro Stock events at Denver and Sonoma. The four-time NHRA Pro Stock champion is hoping to sweep the Western Swing, a feat he accomplished in 2004 – the only Pro Stock driver to do so.
"Winning the last two weeks in a row proves to me that I can still do this,” said Anderson. “It's so much fun, and I've been reminded these last two weeks why I do it. It's just fantastic, and I'm going to Seattle with a smile on my face. I'm eager to race there and see if the cards fall the right way again. I had a lot of luck in Sonoma, we didn't make any big mistakes, and I found my way to the winner's circle. Hopefully, we can do that again this week for the sweep. [08/01/19]
Rottler Manufacturing will once again take over as primary sponsor on Matt Hartford’s NHRA Pro Stocker for the Magic Dry NHRA Northwest Nationals in Seattle this week.
Hartford’s Total Seal company has used Rottler Honing Equipment for over a decade. [08/01/19]
Dutch racer David Vegter led the Pro Modified class qualifying at Santa Pod’s Main Event that opened the season in May.
Santa Pod Raceway’s European Finals event fast approaches, promising a dramatic finish to 2019’s FIA/FIM European Drag Racing Championships. Because of a quirk in the calendar, the first half of the six-race season takes place in monthly instalments, completed last month, but the second half takes place in a flurry, with three races crammed into four weeks – at Hockenheim, Germany (Aug. 16-18) and Tierp, Sweden (Aug. 22-25) then at Santa Pod on Sept. 5-8.
The 10,000-horsepower Top Fuel Dragsters make the most noise, but they are just one of the attractions on the European Finals bill. Among the other FIA classes, a couple of dozen Pro Modifieds can be expected to make the call, along with Pro Stock and Top Methanol fields, and a full program of UK national championship classes will join them. On two wheels, there’ll be four FIM-Europe classes headed by Top Fuel Bikes. [08/01/19]
Well, now the Agent has noticed that totals for all the classes at Seattle are missing from the Entry List (last time it was just the pro classes) on the NHRA website. So, the Agent has taken off his socks and gotten to counting: Top Fuel (15), Funny Car (16), Pro Stock (19), TAD (10), TAFC (12), and Top Fuel Harley (12). [08/01/19]
