Dragsters go ‘northwest’ for two events in a row

The All American Fuel Dragsters will be at the Nightfire Nationals in Boise Aug. 8-11 and a week later at the Nitro Summer Nationals at Spokane County Raceway in Washington state on Aug. 16-18.

The Nightfire Nationals are the third stop on the six-race NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Series and the Spokane event is new for the series.

At Boise, reigning Nightfire Nationals Champion and current points leader Mendy Fry and the “High Speed Motorsports” team will battle fellow California fuelers Adam Sorokin in the “Champion Speed Shop” machine, Jim Murphy in the “WW2” entry, and Bret Williamson in the Mike Fuller Motorsports “Forever Young.” Tyler Hilton has headed in from Ohio to drive the big-block Chevrolet “Great Expectations III” dragster (shown) and Canada’s own Phil Ruskowski and his Island Nitro Gang are bringing their small-block Chevrolet “Xibitionist.”

SoCal racer Pete Wittenberg is set to join the tour at Spokane in the “KMA Circuit Breaker.”

DRO’s own Nostalgia Editor, Brian Losness, will keep an eye (and a camera) on the action.

Funny Car ‘Madness’ heads to Boise

They’ve been quietly testing over the past few months at Famoso Raceway; witness another team of drag boat defectors finding an alternative quarter mile-racing venue since the demise of the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Series. Paso Robles, CA, racer Dale Murray purchased the nitro funny assets of Todd Lesenko’s nitro car operation, at one time run by Steve Plueger, with Tom Sorci tuning it and Jeff Gregory driving the newly launched “Madness” ’75 Camaro nitro funny car.

Named as a tribute to Ron Braaksma’s Top Fuel Hydro, the new asphalt drag racing team will debut at the upcoming 48th Pepsi Nightfire Nationals at Boise’s Firebird Raceway, joining their buddy and former boat racer Eddie Knox for their initial NHRA Heritage Series outing.

Giannaros gets first ANDRA win and looks for second

Australian Super Street racer Michael Giannaros won his first ANDRA Christmas Tree at last weekend’s Desert Nationals and is now making an impromptu trip to this weekend’s NT Nationals as a result.

The Desert Nationals at Alice Springs Inland Dragway was the opening round of the 2019/2020 Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series, which will continue at the Hidden Valley Drag Strip this weekend (Aug. 9-10).

Giannaros’ victory aboard his 1984 Holden VK Commodore came from his first ever Super Street final and with its fair share of nerves for the South Australian racer.

“I thought I’d won the semi and I was very excited to go to the final but then we had to do a re-run due to a faulty light,” he said, “but thankfully it went in my favour again and I got to the final against Chris Hodge.”
