Top Fuel Harley winner Beau Layne
DRO is putting special emphasis on the Factory Stock, Pro Mod, Top Fuel Harley and sportsman classes at the 50th annual NHRA Gatornationals. We have the Top Fuel Harley race report from Motorcycle Editor Tom McCarthy here.
Kevin Riner (near lane) and Mark Alvey in the Super Stock final.
The sportsman results feature photos from DRO veteran Steve Gruenwald and longtime photographer Rick Shute, who joins our merry band.
The Pro Mod and Factory Stock race coverage will come later in the week. [03/19/19]
Pro Stock racer Rodger Brogdon promised to give one lucky fan 50 100-dollar bills as part of the 50th Gatornationals celebration last weekend. Although Brogdon couldn’t get the Pro Stock win, he did come through. Amanda Gadagno of Greenwood, SC, was the winner, who along with her husband, Jimmy, are regulars at Gainesville. Brogdon says he has something even larger planned for the U.S. Nationals.[03/19/19]
Clint Wood of Wendell, NC, and Colby Marshburn of Clinton, NC, were the Super Pro and Pro bracket winners in Sunday’s VWs at the Rock all-Volkswagen drag race and car show at Rockingham Dragway.
Wood (shown) drove his 1964 VW Bug past the Dune Buggy of Larry Heglen of Lancaster, SC, in the Super Pro final after winning the closest race of the day in the semis. In that semifinal race, Wood got to the finish .001 of a second ahead of Corbitt Marshburn in a race too close to call with the naked eye.
Back at the Rock for the first time since 2010, the event drew more than 65 show cars along with a wide variety of racing VWs. Other Sunday winners were Pat Young of Danville, VA, in the Draggin’ Booties class and Dunn, North Carolina’s Thurman Warren Jr. in the Trophy class. [03/19/19]
The New York-based Gasser series will hold 2019 points races at Empire Dragway on May 4, May 25, June 8, June 29, July 13, Aug. 10, Sept. 21 and Oct. 5. The Gold Cup event will be held at the track on July 26-28.
The group will also take part in the Gasser Reunion May 31-June 1 at Ohio’s Thompson Raceway Park. [03/19/19]
