Doug Kalitta and the Mac Tools team are returning to Auto Club Raceway at Pomona hoping to repeat their season opening success and possibly capture their first NHRA Top Fuel world championship.
Two weeks ago at The Strip at Las Vegas a broken connection wire in the Mac Tools’ safety box broke during the burnout setting off the safety measures which deployed the parachutes and shut off the motor. Kalitta was unable to make the run against point leader Steve Torrence and moved to third in the points, now 55 behind Torrence. Brittany Force moved into second place with 16 points fewer than Torrence.
With each round worth 30 points at the season finale Kalitta is easily within striking distance. This will be the fourth time Kalitta and the Mac Tools team has rolled into the last race of the season with a chance to claim the world championship.
“We run really well at Pomona and I would love to bookend this season with a win here this weekend to go along with our win at the Winternationals,” he said. [11/14/19]
Two years ago, entering the season-ending Auto Club NHRA Finals, Brittany Force trailed Steve Torrence by a mere 20 points in her bid to become the first woman in 35 years to win the NHRA Mello Yello Top Fuel championship. She responded by qualifying No. 1, setting the track record, winning the race and joining Shirley Muldowney as the only other woman to win the class championship.
Now, coming off a victory two weeks ago at Las Vegas and after becoming the first Top Fuel driver since Tony Schumacher to simultaneously hold the NHRA performance records for time (3.623 seconds) and speed (338.17 miles per hour), Force is poised to become just the 10th driver in Top Fuel history to win multiple championships.
She feels confident her team with tuners David Grubnic and Mac Savage can move to the top of the class. “The biggest difference this time around is I’ve been in the hunt for a championship before,” she said, “so I have a better idea of how to deal with the pressure.” [11/14/19]
