AGENT 1320
DRO’s web master was hospitalized on Thursday, Oct. 3, and is scheduled to stay for a few days. The remainder of the week all Agent 1320 notes will be on Facebook. We’re hoping for a speedy recovery. [10/03/19]
Ken Singleton was the winner of the A field at the season-ending Funny Car Chaos at Denton, TX, on Sept. 28 while Nick Poloson won the B field. Singleton also was the 2019 champion.
Singleton’s “High Risk” dispatched Mark Billington and Ronny Young’s “Blue Max” before taking a 3.767/200.00 win over Doug Schneider’s 3.845/193.30.
Allan Middendorf walked away from a crash into the catch net and sand trap at North Star Dragway after his parachutes failed to deploy. He was checked out by track medical personal and cleared. During the second qualifying session, Middendorf reset the E.T. record in his “American Outlaw” and just barely missed resetting the speed record with a run of 3.574 at 222.99 mph. During the third qualifying session on Saturday he reset that speed record going 3.582 at 227.16 mph before going into net and sand. Unfortunately for Middendorf, the car was heavily damaged and was unable to compete in eliminations. He finished second in the championship points.
Nick Poloson got past Steve Timoszyk and Tod Barker to meet Clay Cunningham in the B final. Poloson’s “Bucket List” turned in a 3.989 at 182.33 mph to Cunningham’s 4.173/170.13. [10/03/19]
Editor Jeff Burk will be heading to Bonne Terre, MO, on Saturday, Oct. 5, to witness something he is beginning to relate to more and more: slow cars.
In addition to their regular racing, Bonne Terre Drag Strip will host 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0 and 9.0 classes where if you hit the brakes before the finish line or run faster than the index, you lose. The 7.0 to 9.0 cars must complete a 30-mile cruise that begins at 1 p.m. [10/03/19]
Dallas Gardner, NHRA’s board chairman, has announced his retirement and will hand over the reins to current NHRA chief executive officer Peter Clifford effective immediately. Gardner will continue to work with the NHRA as a consultant.
Gardner joined NHRA as treasurer in 1973 and was promoted to vice president and general manager in 1978. In January 1984 he became the second president in NHRA history, serving for 15 years. He became chairman of the board of directors in January 2000. [10/03/19]
The 25th Annual World Power Wheel Standing Championships return to Byron (IL) Dragway on Sunday, Oct. 6. Saturday and Sunday will also see drag racing with the Top Dog Shootout, Top Sportsman Showdown, Midwest Index Shootout, and Chicagoland Super Stocks. [10/03/19]
The Coffeyville event is a sanctioned, legal street racing event conducted annually by the small city in Kansas, which is complete with barriers and safety personnel on-site. According to multiple eyewitness accounts, Hunt lost control of his car at the finish line and made contact with his opponent before hitting a utility pole at an estimated 120 mph. He was pronounced dead at the scene. [10/03/19]
