FRIDAY 1320 NOTES

RECORD TIMES, SPEEDS, FALL IN FIRST NIGHT OF TESTING AT HOUSE OF HOOK

Mike Neal driving for Don Stroud came out early in the afternoon and shoed Stroud’s supercharged ’53 Willys Pro Outlaw car to a stout 3.982 at just 176.19. Up to that point none of the 20 or so cars had come close to a good number, When Neal’s numbers came up on the boards you could see drivers leaving the starting line and hear the sound of trailer doors hitting the concrete. Suddenly testing became serious and a lot more cars started entering the staging lanes.

By the end of the night John Lynam’s blown ‘Vette had bettered both ends of the Pro Outlaw record with a lap of 3.955 at 187.68. Although it wouldn’t count towards qualifying or a record it did serve notice that this race was going to be very serious.

Other racers who ran very well include Tommy Mauney’s blown ’41 Willys at 4.005/178.99 Joey Martin’s ex Mike Ashley Willys ran a 4.039/181.62 and Eddie Ware also in a ’41 Willys ran 4.007/179.11

The only two nitrous cars in the 4.0 range were Sonny Tindal’s immaculate Pontiac Grand-Am and Mauney’s second 41 Willys, which uses nitrous.  There were plenty of nitrous cars in the four-teens.

CASTELLANA A NO SHOW!

The DRO cover curse befell Mike Castellana who was entered and was on the cover of DRO but was unable to attend due to business commitments.

BENNIE JETS THE GUARDWALL

The lone crash of the evenings test session came when Bennie McDonald launched his blown ’53 Vette hard and then spun the tires just as hard and made a hard left turn into the wall.

MAUNEY GOES INTO THREE'S AS TESTING ENDS

Tommy Mauney just came our and ran a 3.996/180.36 and Eddie Ware followed with a 3.98/177 thanks to tuning help from Jimmy Rector who is tuning the car this weekend. Also Toney Russell who put a Hemi in his "Lowmad" Nomad Chevy ran 4.031/180.14.His first pass in the 4.0 zone.
