Paul Moits, Australia's quickest and fastest man in a doored car, has a new ANDRA and IHRA Australia legal steed that will soon take on the toughest, fastest and quickest Australian Top Doorslammer and Pro Slammers in their own backyard.
The new car is a ’68 fastback Mustang on a Jerry Bickel chassis. The Proline 520 engine has a PSI supercharger and a 3-speed Lenco drive. Moits is perhaps most famous for driving a tubocharged vehicle, but he is no stranger to superchargers, having driven the Steve Sarkis blown Nova at Sydney Dragway.
As soon as the car arrives in Australia it will be set up and tested prior to its debut at the upcoming Nitro Up North event at Hidden Valley Raceway in Darwin, Northern Territory, on July 21-22. If all goes well, Moits and the team will race the following weekend in exhibition at Alice Springs, NT. [06/26/17]

Earl’s New Shop Tools
Earl’s Cylinder Head Bolts are about 15 percent stronger than the strongest Grade 8 bolts and available for a huge array of popular applications. Manufactured from 170,000-PSI chromoly steel, they feature a reduced wrench size (12-point or hex-head) for extra socket clearance around the rocker arms when you re-torque the heads. The wide-flange head distributes the load evenly and provides additional support for the extra-thick chromoly washers. Available in a black-oxide finish and sold in complete sets, these made-in-the-USA fasteners are reusable, eliminating the hassle and expense of replacing OEM-style torque-to-yield bolts each time you remove the heads. Jeff Strickland, driving his Chevrolet COPO Camaro, won the Stock Eliminator class for his 15th national victory by defeating Jim Boburka, also driving a Chevrolet COPO Camaro, in the final at Norwalk. The resident of Red Bay, AL, who was the 2016 Stock Eliminator champion, also won the Top Dragster final. It is the 37th time that a driver has doubled up on an NHRA race weekend.
Nick Folk, Durand, Ill., first met up with Tony Helms in Super Comp. Helms had the early lead but broke out and Folk clocked in at 8.925, 165.46. Folk then lined up against Zack Running in Super Stock and secured his double when Running left early with a red light. The win in Super Stock marked the sixth different class that Folk has won an NHRA national event in. [06/26/17]
His 2016 Funny Car world championship season and hot start to the 2017 season has earned Ron Capps a nomination for an ESPY award in the Best Driver category. This is the first time he has been nominated for the prestigious honor in his 23-year NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series career.
Capps is nominated alongside Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, IndyCar driver Simon Pagenaud, and NASCAR drivers Jimmie Johnson and Martin Truex Jr. The ESPY Awards, for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly, was created by ESPN in 1993. The nominees are selected for their performances over the past 12 months.
“What we did with our NAPA Auto Parts team last year was huge after trying to win the championship for about 20 years,” Capps said. “Just to be nominated with this group is unbelievable.”
Fans can vote for Capps and their other sports heroes at http://es.pn/TupHtl.
The 25th edition of the ESPY awards will be hosted by Peyton Manning and will be held at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Voting for the ESPYS ends July 12 at 8 p.m. ET. [06/26/17]
For 2017, the winner will take home $10,000 and in 2018 and 2019 the winner will receive $25,000, with $10,000 going to the runner-up, two semifinalists will receive $6,000, and the quarter final finishers will get $3,500 for a total purse of $61,000. [06/26/17]
Troy Coughlin ran the fastest pass in Pro Mod history -- a stunning 259.31 mph top speed achieved during a 5.756-second pass -- to easily earn the top qualifying spot in the J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series in Norwalk.
Coughlin's record run came in the hottest qualifying session Saturday and unseated retired pro Melanie Troxel from the top spot in the record books, a perch she held for six full years since running 258.71 mph on June 4, 2011.
"We are absolutely thrilled to get that speed record," said Coughlin, who hails from Delaware, Ohio. "Steve Petty, Kyle Pettis, Mike Rees, everyone at JEGS, everyone at Proline, this is for you guys. You've all put in so much effort and it's showing these last few races. Capping it off with this world record makes it all the better.
"Melanie Troxel held that mark for a long time and we've all been fighting through the various rule changes to get back to running those kind of numbers again. To finally get it done, right here in our backyard, is really, really special." [06/26/17]
A week after the emotional first win for Clay Millican at Bristol, the NHRA drag racing world had a heartwarming story play out at Norwalk. John Gaydosh took his Gaydosh Performance Camaro to the semifinals of the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals, the first time in his career he has been in the semifinals.
Last week at Bristol, the part-time Pro Stock racer’s motor broke on the burnout of the first qualifying pass and he was unable to compete. Gray Motorsports provided an experimental engine for Gaydosh to use this weekend, but the car had to be retrofitted to accept the power plant, which meant a real thrash for the crew.
Then, this past week Gaydosh’s mentor and crew member, Brad “Pop” Wallace died suddenly. It has been a lot for the team to overcome.
“Without Shane Gray, without Johnny Gray, we wouldn’t have been here this weekend. I can’t thank Shane, Johnny and the whole Gray Motorsports company for all they’ve done to help us get out here,” Gaydosh said. “It’s awesome that they are so kind to us and they know my struggles and they know how bad I want to do this. And I really appreciate everything they do for us.”
Although the they bowed out in the semifinal, they got past Drew Skillman and Jeg Coughlin Jr. For their efforts Gaydosh’s team was presented with the “Edelbrock Never Rest Performer” award.
“That was a surprise. You know that’s just my work ethic 100 percent. It’s all I do is work that hard all the time. I don’t need an award for that. That’s my work ethic,” exclaimed Gaydosh. “I love doing this more than anything else in the world. Hopefully I can find some sponsorship so I can run more races because I can do better. I just need a little help.”
The next race for Gaydosh and the team will be the U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis.
See the Norwalk pro class results at here. [06/26/17]
Well, there’s good news and bad news. For the first time in several events there were more than enough entries in all the pro classes at Norwalk with 18 in Top Fuel, 17 each in Funny Car and Pro Stock, and 19 in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
That means some racers made the effort for nothing. The only racer not to make the Funny Car field was Courtney Force, with Charlie Westcott Jr. left out of Pro Stock. [06/26/17]

Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels is the official sponsor for the NHRA Pro Bike Battle at northern California's Sonoma Raceway—an all-star bonus event for the eight quickest Pro Stock Motorcycle riders in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. The 2017 Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals will be held July 28-30 with TV coverage provided by FS1.
Contested as a special race-within-a-race, Pro-Stock riders began earning points for the 2017 NHRA Pro Bike Battle during the 2016 Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals, and will continue earning points through the 2017 Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals in Denver. The eight riders accumulating the most qualifying points during the 16-race qualifying period will earn a berth in the 2017 NHRA Pro Bike Battle on Saturday, July 29, at Sonoma Raceway.
For 2017, the winner will take home $10,000 and in 2018 and 2019 the winner will receive $25,000, with $10,000 going to the runner-up, two semifinalists will receive $6,000, and the quarter final finishers will get $3,500 for a total purse of $61,000. [06/26/17]
