Coughlin uncle and niece to compete at All-American Hot Rod Showdown

A couple of members of the Coughlin family will come from Ohio to Illinois to compete at Gateway Motorsports Park this weekend. The weekend features Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars.

Mike Coughlin will be racing his JEGS.com top Dragster that he drove to a win at his 2017 debut at the Winternationals. Mike is currently third in national and North Central Division points.

Southeast Gassers have one more event on 2017 schedule

The Southeast Gassers Association held a no-time event at North Myrtle Beach, NC, on Oct. 14.

 

Kenneth Phillips got the A/Gas win over Donovan Stott; Doug Dobbins beat Todd Blackwell in C/Gas; and Josh Pruitt took the D/Gas win over Todd Oden.

 

The season finals for this group will be Saturday, Nov. 4, at Shadyside Dragway in Shelby, NC.   [10/19/17]

By the Numbers

The Agent saw that the NHRA eliminations show on Oct. 1 from St. Louis attracted 299,000 viewers on FS1 with a 0.05 rating.

 

According to the Nielsen rating system that’s up 10% from last year’s 273,00 on FS1, but down 12% from 2015 on ESPN2 (339,000). It was the second-most watched NHRA telecast opposite the NFL since Fox sports acquired the rights last year, trailing only Las Vegas in October 2016.  [10/19/17]

Just in time for this weekend’s PDRA World Finals at Virginia Motorsports Park PDRA co-owners Tommy and Judy Franklin have announced the purchase of the central Virginia facility.

 

As longtime racers, the Franklins upped their investment when they co-founded the PDRA in early 2014. Over the last three and a half years, the Virginia natives have continually shown their commitment to eighth-mile drag racing as well as the entire sport in a variety of ways. Their purchase of VMP allows them to further support the racing community in Virginia, the PDRA and beyond.

 

VMP was built in 1994 and features a quarter-mile dragstrip, motocross and BMX facilities, a mud pit for tractor pulls, and an autocross course. The dragstrip hosted the first-ever, national-level event in Virginia. The track has been sanctioned under both IHRA and NHRA in the past, and is currently sanctioned with NHRA.   [10/19/17]

IHRA sportsman end season this weekend at Memphis

This weekend will see the IHRA Summit World Finals held at Memphis International Raceway. Hundreds of Summit SuperSeries track champions and Summit Team Finals divisional champions from around the U.S. and Canada will gather to see who are the best of the best.

 

The IHRA Summit SuperSeries will crown champions in Top (Box), Mod (No Box) and Junior Dragster at the Summit World Finals. The $200,000 program is the championship competition for IHRA member Sportsman racers and it features an increased and expanded purse for 2017.

 

The championship prize package in Top and Mod is $20,000 to the winner and $7,000 for the runner-up. Other payoffs include: $2,000 for sixth round, $1,000 for fifth round, $700 for fourth round, $600 for third round, $400 for second round and $300 for first round.

 

Allison Lloyd from Richmond Dragway was the 2016 Junior National Champion.The Junior Dragster championship payout is a brand-new, turn-key JR Race Car Junior Dragster, plus $3,000. It is $2,000 for the runner-up, $1,000 for sixth round, $800 for fifth round, $500 for fourth round, $400 for third round, $350 for second round and $300 for first round.

 

Mickey Nelson from Maryland International Raceway was the 2016 Top ET national champion, Vic Ellinger from Thompson Raceway Park was the Mod ET National Champion.  [10/19/17]

Snyder will try new set up at Gateway

Reigning NHRA North Central Division Champion Mick Snyder and team are headed to Gateway Motorsports Park for the rescheduled NHRA Lucas Oil All-American Hot Rod Showdown Oct. 20-22.

 

The team has made some significant changes for this weekend’s action.

 

“We have a really fast Powersource Transportation Vette with this Snyder Motorsports Hemi, ComSyncEFI and Lencodrive combo. We made some changes to the car since the last race and I have been putting in the late nights crunching numbers into the ComSyncEFI System. The plan is to make the Orange Menace a little more menacing,” Snyder smiled.

 

“As we make more passes, spend more late nights crunching numbers and scour more data from our past 20 years of blown racing experience, we can only learn more and advance for both our customers and our car. I’m a little sad to see the season coming to a close. I just want a few more laps to test our ideas. Oh, and a little Wally to finish off the season right.”

 

All eliminations will be run on Saturday, due to rain in the forecast for Sunday. Spectators will pay only $20 per carload to attend. (Joe McHugh photo)   [10/19/17]
