NHRA drivers ‘play ball’

OK, you tell us how he fits in this car!

NHRA drivers and All-Star NBA personalities took part in a team drag racing competition featuring Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley. The All-Star Motor Sports Challenge will air on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 5 p.m. Eastern on TNT as part of its coverage for NBA All-Star weekend.

Drag racer John Force, Brittany Force, Antron Brown and Erica Enders provided an acceleration education to coach a roster of All-Star NBA personalities including O’Neal and Barkley, who served as team captains. Other NBA personalities who participated are Kenny Smith, Baron Davis, Ernie Johnson, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller and Candace Parker.

NMRA makes changes to ‘King of the Street’

This year’s NMRA King of the Street competition will be a little bit different. This year the winner will be determined only on the drag strip and the way to get invited to the final competition will be to win one of the six NMRA events.

The IDIDIT Performance King of the Street will take the Overall Winner in QA1 True Street from each stop of the NMRA tour, along with the class winners of JLT Performance Spring Break Shootout and the Gateway Rumble, to create an 8-car field.

The eight cars will race for the IDIDIT Performance King of the Street title on Sunday of the NMRA World Finals. In the event a competitor holds more than 1 invitation or there is a no-show, NMRA officials will use the final True Street results from the World Finals to fill the empty spots on the ladder.

The competition begins March 1-4 with the NMRA Spring Break Shootout at Bradeton, FL.

Mickey Thompson to sponsor DSR Factory Stock duo

Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels has announced a sponsorship agreement with Don Schumacher Racing’s NHRA Factory Stock Showdown Series program and driver Leah Pritchett.

The sponsorship of DSR’s SAMTech.edu NHRA Mopar Factory Stock Showdown Series team will involve support for drivers Leah Pritchett and Mark Pawuk. The agreement includes plans for driver appearances, marketing partnerships and exposure on Pritchett’s social media channels throughout the 2019 and 2020 race seasons.

The Factory Stock series begins March 14-17 at the Gatornationals. Pritchett, who also drives in Top Fuel, was the 2018 Factory Stock Showdown champion.

Mitch Myers returns to sport after 15 years

Mitch Myers last drove a Top Alcohol Dragster in 2004, but after winning a championship, left the sport. This year he will be back behind the wheel of an A/Fuel dragster owned by Larry Miersch that will be tuned by Miersch and Jim Rizzoli.

“A lot has changed, but a lot has stayed the same,” Myers said. “The safety is better. I flew down to get fitted in the car, and it was so odd. Believer it or not, I fit like a glove. It was like 15 years evaporated. I don’t have any reservations about my age. I’m in better physical shape. Heck, I was still in third grade when John Force graduated high school.”

The team will be running 8-10 national events making their debut at the Four-Wide Nationals at Las Vegas on April 5-7.
