What a way to win for McGaha

In what had to be one of his wildest days of racing, Chris McGaha got his first Pro Stock win of the year at Epping, NH.

It started with a holeshot win over Jeg Coughlin Jr. (0.009 RT to 0.030) and another one over Greg Anderson (0.025 to 0.079). In the semifinal, McGaha’s Chevrolet went into severe tire shake and coasted to a humiliating 16.762 at 49.34 mph, however, opponent Kenny Delco had turned on the red light and McGaha went on to the final, where a resurgent Erica Enders also red-lighted, handing the win to McGaha.

With eight different winners in 13 races this season, Pro Stock is much more competitive than it has been in the past.

“You look at it and Greg (Anderson) and Jason (Line) haven’t won a race yet,” said McGaha. “That’s pretty serious after the dominant seasons they’ve had coming up to this point, so the fact they haven’t won says a lot. It says a guy like me even has a chance.”

Might we suggest long pants at least

This incident happened during a cackle session last weekend at the Goodguys PPG Nationals in Columbus, Ohio. Do we need to remind everyone that NITRO is dangerous?

Sackman set to make NHRA TAD debut at Joliet

Top Dragster driver and Top Fuel crew member Matt Sackman will make his NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster debut this weekend at Route 66 Raceway’s Burndown at Sundown NHRA Division 3 event, July 13-15. With support from Gemini Farms and Hangsterfer’s Metalworking Lubricants, Sackman will drive a nitromethane-injected A/Fuel dragster out of the Kansas-based Randy Meyer Racing camp.

Sackman, 25 and a cylinder head specialist on Antron Brown’s Top Fuel dragster, will compete alongside Randy Meyer Racing driver Julie Nataas.

His 22-year-old brother, Zach, will be competing in Top Dragster, coming off a win at Indianapolis last week.

“Zach and I haven’t raced together at an event since we moved out of Jr. Dragsters, so that will be something new,” Matt said. “We’re both racing at our home track where we used to race in Jr. Dragsters and watch the alcohol cars and pros race at the Route 66 Nationals.”

Hart wins TAD at ‘Summer Spectacle’ at Indianapolis

Josh Hart and Steve Burck raced to victory July 8 at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and the Summer Spectacle at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. Hart took home the honors in Top Alcohol Dragster as Burck ousted the field in Top Alcohol Funny Car.

Hart, Ocala, FL, qualified No. 2 and met up with third generation racer Troy Coughlin Jr., Delaware, OH, who was coming off a win at the last Lucas Oil North Central Division event in Norwalk, Ohio. Hart was out first and pulled away for his sixth win running 5.369 seconds at 268.44 mph as Coughlin slowed to a 6.686, 147.86.

Ray Drew, Hales Corners, WI, was out first on Burck only to have Texas racer Burck come around him for the win. Burck clocked in at 5.696, 261.07 in his ‘17 Camaro funny car for the third win of his career.

Devin Isenhower advanced to the final in both Super Gas and Super Comp looking for the elusive double-up. He first faced off with Rusty Cook in Super Gas with Cook taking the holeshot with a perfect .000 second reaction time. Isenhower, Lebanon, IN, made it up on the top end taking the win and the first half of the double-up with a 9.908 on the 9.90 index. In Super Comp, Isenhower got the early lead but it was Adam Gerber, Massillon, OH, with the better package running 8.908 at 172.32 for his first career win, denying Isenhower a second win for the weekend.

Stock Eliminator saw a heads-up final round with Ken Whitcher, Beloit, OH, taking on Bo Fowler, Mooresville, IN. Fowler left a tick too quick and Whitcher ran it out to a 11.320-second pass in his ’69 Camaro for his first win.

New Product of the Day

JEGS SBC Cast Iron Vortec Cylinder Head

JEGS Cast Iron Vortec Cylinder Head has fast burn combustion chambers and high-velocity intake and exhaust ports. This head performs great right out of the box but can be mildly ported and milled up to 0.040-inch and requires a Vortec-style intake manifold; modifying the head to accept an early intake manifold is not recommended. Assembled with premium parts such as manganese valve guides and hardened steel retainers. The Vortec Heads fits all 1955-present GM small blocks except LT1, LT4, and LS1-style engines.
