Tony Schumacher and Morgan Lucas at Richmond in October 2008.
Don Schumacher Racing drivers Antron Brown, Tony Schumacher and Jack Beckman hold the track records at Virginia Motorsports Park, but can they hold onto them this weekend?
Tony Schumacher set the Top Fuel ET record of 3.771 seconds in 2008; Brown set the speed record of 319.60 mph a year later, and Beckman set the Funny Car ET record of 4.004 seconds, also in 2009, the last year NHRA held a national event at the track.
“A lot has changed since the last time we were there as far as our series,” said the younger Schumacher. “We’re much quicker, much more powerful than ever before, and it’s been a long time since they’ve (the fans) seen anything like that.”
The Virginia track was recently purchased by longtime Pro Mod racer Tommy Franklin.
“You can appreciate someone buying a racetrack and doing the things that need to be done to give us a safe and competitive place to come back to,” Schumacher added. “The track itself – all concrete – is going to be pretty nice and I’m really looking forward to it.” [06/07/18]
A Cacklefest featuring six cars from the Great Lakes Nostalgia Funny Car Circuit and eight more from ScottRods AA/Gassers will fire up on Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in front of the Manufacturers Midway tent. In addition, Ryan Martin and Jeff Lutz from No Prep Kings will have their vehicles on display. Ryan’s “Fire Ball” and Lutz’s “The ‘57” will make passes on Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at noon and 4 p.m. [06/07/18]
At Joliet Jeg Coughlin Jr. earned his 59th Pro Stock win and first since June 2014 by defeating No. 1 qualifier Greg Anderson in the final.
Dominating the class, Chevrolet has won every Pro Stock race this season, but only Vincent Nobile (Mountain View Tire Camaro SS) is a two-time winner. Elite Performance-prepared Camaros have won five of the past six Pro Stock events.
"There's absolutely no reason to stop now," said Jeg Coughlin, who won the 2000 race at Virginia Motorsports Park. "When you run through race day like we did in Chicago with the best car in every round, you become a believer in the fact you should be able to do that time and again.
"Our goal now is to repeat and get this JEGS/Elite Chevy to be as consistent as possible, so we can have a lot more days that end in the winner's circle. If the guys continue to give me a stout race car and I do my job behind the wheel, it should happen more and more." [06/07/18]
Out of 501 total entries, 433 are sportsman racers for the 400 Thunder’s Gulf Western Oil Winternationals this weekend at Willowbank Raceway. Championships for all the classes are still up for grabs coming into the final event of the season.

Groups 1 and 2 of the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage series will be at the Nite of Fire on Saturday, June 9, at Sacramento Raceway. Qualifying begins Friday at 5 p.m. with a second qualifying session on Saturday at 11 a.m. before eliminations begin at 2 p.m.
There is plenty of other action scheduled including four jet dragster, nitro match racing, CIFCA funny cars, NOR CAL Drag Bikes, and vintage street hot rods. [06/07/18]
