Two periods of rain cancelled racing Friday at Willowbank Raceway after the first qualifying session of Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle were completed, but before Pro Slammer could get finished.

Rain over the past two days also has caused major disruptions to the Sportsman sessions. The revised schedule for Saturday begins at 8 a.m.   [06/08/18]

Veteran Top Fuel driver Dom Lagana will wheel a second CatSpot Organic Cat Litter Top Fuel dragster in NHRA's return to Virginia Motorsports Park this weekend for the Virginia Nationals. Lagana will serve as a teammate to CatSpot Organic Cat Litter driver Scott Palmer.

Lagana debuted a new Morgan Lucas Racing-built chassis at Charlotte earlier this year, showing plenty of promise with the car. With more data available from Palmer and his new crew chief, Jason McCulloch, Lagana hopes to build on the Charlotte race and compete with the best in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

"It would be nice to lay a couple good low-.80 or high-.70 runs down if the track will take it," Lagana said. "We made some good progress with the new car in Charlotte. We made one run that would've been in the high-.70s, so we'll build off of that and see what the weather conditions do.”    [06/08/18]

The 1/10th scale Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars competing this weekend in the 11th annual International Model Drag Racing Association East Coast Nationals at Rockingham Dragway deliver performances that rival and often eclipse those of their big brothers.

Using the same kind of technology employed by touring pros in the NHRA’s Mello Yello Series including clutch management systems, differing tire compounds and chassis turning expertise, IMDRA race cars are anything but toys. They’re just very small race cars competing on a 132-foot course instead of one 1,320 feet long.

When Tony Rudis set the world record in the Extreme Rail class, for instance, his car covered the first 66 feet of the course in .750 seconds. When Clay Millican won the Top Fuel championship at last week’s NHRA event at Chicago, he covered the first 60 feet in .834 seconds. Moreover, the 132-foot Rockingham track is afforded the same attention to detail in preparation as its quarter mile sister which is why The Rock is the favorite stop on the IMDRA tour.

More than 100 competitors from 15 states and Puerto Rico are expected to compete for more than $2,000 in cash and awards along with titles in 12 different classes.

Admission to Saturday’s qualifying sessions and Sunday’s single elimination finals is free and parking, as always, is free in Rockingham’s main lot.   [06/08/18]
