Tom Shelar passes away unexpectedly

Tom Shelar with Mendy Fry, who drove his AA/FD to wins at Boise and Spokane.

It is with profound sadness and shock that we must report the passing of High Speed Motorsports owner and tuner, Tom Shelar.

“Having spent the last two weekends with Shelar and team makes this even harder,” said DRO Nostalgia Editor Brian Losness. “Shelar was an innovator, a motivator, a hard-nosed competitor, and someone who loved to enjoy life. He was damn good at all of these.”

We at DragRacingOnline.com want to express our condolences to the Shelar family and the High Speed Motorsports Team. No funeral arrangements have been announced yet.

DSR again partners with Riley Hospital for U.S. Nationals

Since 2014, Tommy Johnson Jr’s Doug and Terry Chandler-funded ‘giving car’ entry has donned a Riley Kids livery at the team’s hometown event, providing national exposure for the local nonprofit organization.

On Friday, August 30, from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. ET, Don Schumacher Racing will open the doors to its 145,000-square-foot state-of-the-art racing facility (1681 E. Northfield Dr., Brownsburg, IN 46112) for the 14th annual DSR Open House. DSR drivers Jack Beckman, Antron Brown, Ron Capps, Matt Hagan, Leah Pritchett and Tommy Johnson Jr. will be at the Open House to meet and greet fans.

Fans who are not able to attend the Open House can still support the DSR/Riley Children’s Foundation partnership. Beginning Monday, August 26, the online link DSRopenhouse19.givemart.com will be live accepting donations and Open House auction item bids.

The annual Open House event, along with the yearly ‘This is How We Roll’ bowling function, taking place on December 11, 2019, are the team’s two major fundraisers for Riley Hospital in Indianapolis. Since the partnership began in 2006, the largest team in drag racing has successfully raised more than $640,000 for Riley, with more than $120,000 generated from 2018’s fundraising efforts.

Off the Track: James Bond car sells for over $6M

A 1965 Aston Martin DB5 from the James Bond “Thunderball” movie was sold Thursday, Aug. 15, at Sotheby’s Monterey Car Week auction for $6.35 million. The silver car is one that even non-car lovers will recognize as 007’s preferred ride. The cars were featured in “Goldfinger” and “Thunderball.”

It is a new record for DB5s. This car (chassis no. DB%/2008/R) was built as a promo car and was not driven in the filming of the movie.

But never fear, if you missed your chance to bid, you can call up Aston Martin and order one of the 25 DB5 “Goldfinger” continuation cars that the automaker is currently offering. These will also come with all of the spy gadgetry that appeared on screen.
