Burk’s Blasting again

With the U.S. Nationals coming up, DRO editor Jeff Burk (jeffburk@dragracingonline.com) has been thinking about the history and the future of NHRA drag racing. He has an idea for NHRA management at here.

Big Three manufacturers all win at NMCA All-American Nationals

Aaron Allison was the COPO Camaro Shootout winner.

In addition to the NMCA’s regularly contested categories, the All-American Nationals at Summit Motorsports Park -- located two hours from Detroit, the birthplace of Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler -- featured the Chevrolet Performance 50th Anniversary COPO Camaro Shootout presented by COPO Parts Direct, and the Ford Performance Cobra Jet Showdown presented by Watson Racing.

All of the manufacturers were represented in the winner’s circle. See the complete race report at here.

The final stop on this year’s NMCA tour, the 18th Annual NMCA World Street Finals presented by Chevrolet Performance, will be Sept. 19-20 at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis.

Harleys will clinch first NHRA championship of the season

The Top Fuel Harleys will clinch their championship – and it IS a professional national championship – at the U.S. Nationals this Labor Day weekend, the first of the NHRA classes to do so.

Leading the points in the 10-event Mickey Thompson Tires NHRA Top Fuel Harley Drag Racing Series is Tii Tharpe (shown) with 560 points followed by Doug Vancil with 533. Indy offers 1.5 points and how appropriate that the prestigious U.S. Nats will see the champion crowned.

Can Daniels do it again? Going for fourth Hemi Challenge win

Jimmy Daniels (far lane) got the better of teammate Gary Wolkwitz in the Hemi Challenge final last year.

Jimmy Daniels is hoping for an amazing fourth straight win at this year’s Dodge Hemi Challenge during the U.S. Nationals. Since taking over the driver’s seat of his father Jim Sr.’s ’68 Dart in 2016, Daniels has not lost a round in the prestigious event – that’s 14 straight round wins.

Looking back at Hector Jr’s historic 200-mph run

DRO Motorcycle Editor Tom McCarthy takes a look back at Hector Arana Jr’s historic 200-mph run at the 2018 Gatornationals.

He was the first Pro Stock Motorcycle rider to reach that number, and a year and a half later, only two others (Eddie Krawiec and Matt Smith) have joined the Denso Spark Plugs 200-mph Club. It’s quite an achievement.

Justin Kamm named Memphis General Manager

IRG Sports + Entertainment has announced Justin Kamm at the general manager for Memphis International Raceway. He will oversee the operations of the 342-acre facility that includes quarter-mile dragstrip, 1.8-mile road course, and ¾-mile high-banked paved oval.

Kamm was most recently director of corporate partnerships for John Force Racing. Before that he was part of the management teams at Palm Beach International Raceway (also owned by IRG), New Jersey Motorsports Park and zMAX Dragway.

Factory Stock Showdown’s big day at Big Go

Drew Skillman (far lane) leads the Factory Stock Showdown points with 447, followed by Bo Butner with 358.

In addition to the Top Fuel Harleys, DRO will pay special attention to the Factory Stock Showdown at the U.S. Nationals. A special 32-car field is planned for the Big Go, but right now there are 31 entrants.

And speaking on the numbers of Indy entrants, Top Fuel has 21; Funny Car has 19; Pro Stock has 21; Pro Stock Motorcycle has 20; Top Fuel Harley has 13; and Pro Mod has 26.
