The famous “Carbonite” Land Speed Record race car driven by Rob Freyvogel, of Pennsylvania, crashed badly during the World of Speed event at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, on Sunday, Sept. 15. The car was traveling at over 350 MPH when something went wrong and in the ensuing crash, Rob was very badly injured. As of Wednesday, Sept. 18, he remains in Intensive Care as he suffered significant head trauma. [09/18/19]
The Fall Fling 500K began on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Bristol Dragway with the American Race Cars/Race Tech Dragster Shootout. The winner and runner-up of the 32-car field received a new dragster, with the winner having first choice.
In the final round, Jake Woodring met Shane Maddox. Woodring used a dead-on the dial with a “0” and an 0.011 RT to turn away Maddox, who had a better Reaction Time but was 0.015 off his dial. Woodring chose the Race Tech dragster and Maddox left with the American. [09/18/19]
Additionally, beginning January 1, 2020, roll-cage padding meeting SFI 45.1 or SFI 45.2 specifications will be mandatory anywhere a driver’s helmet may come in contact with roll-cage components while on the track or during an accident. [09/18/19]
From left, Buddy Thornley, Janette Thornley, Patti Vreeland and Rich Vreeland.
Pro Fuel rider Janette Thornley is partnering with two-time AMRA Nitro Bike Champion, Rich Vreeland, to make her NHRA Top Fuel Harley debut in 2020. The Straightline Strategy Group rider is looking forward to participating in all 10 of the Mickey Thompson Tires NHRA Top Fuel Harley Drag Racing Series events next season.
The husband and wife duos, Janette and crew chief Buddy, and Rich and Patti Vreeland have had a 20-year relationship both on and off the track. The opportunity for Rich to serve as mentor to Janette is priceless. While Janette obtains her seat time during test sessions, Rich will kick off the season as the team pilot of the Top Fuel Harley.
The team is scheduled to debut its Top Fuel Harley this year at the 2019 Man Cup World Finals held at South Georgia Motorsports Park outside Valdosta, GA, on Nov. 21-24. [09/18/19]
Super Gas racer Renee Cockerill has selected this weekend’s Sunset Strip Nationals event as her comeback to the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series after a number of years away. She will be racing Sept. 21-22 at the third event of the 2019/2020 season held at Mildura, Australia’s Sunset Strip Nationals.
Despite two decades of racing experience behind her, the 42-year-old has yet to get an ANDRA Christmas Tree trophy. Cockerill is well-known for her ‘32 Model A Roadster but in recent years has been competing in a Ford GT 500 Mustang at local events.
“We have done a little bit of racing with it over the last five years,” Cockerill said, “but we have struggled to get a proper handle on it and have been chopping and changing things a lot trying to get it down the track reliably. Hopefully this time around we have got it right!” [09/18/19]
For the third time this season the FS1 viewership numbers for the NHRA’s national event were below the 300,000 mark necessary to make the ratings list.
While Maple Grove Raceway hosted the NHRA, on Sunday, Sept. 15, the highest rated motorsports event was the NASCAR Cup race from Las Vegas with 2,384,000 viewers and a 1.42 rating shown on NBC. [09/18/19]
