Mike Lang’s 1957 Corvette is one of many Super Gas cars that will be at Fontana for the Outlaw Pro Gas competition.
The Marcum Brothers Outlaw Pro Gas series will debut this Friday, May 18, at Auto Club Dragway as a part of the NHRA Pacific Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Champion Cooling Systems will sponsor the first event, with competition scheduled during the test-and-tune day of the divisional event. Outlaw Pro Gas will run on an 8.90 index and is limited to traditional door cars and roadsters with modified Super Gas rules.
Payouts for the race will include $2,000 to win, $1,000 for runner-up, $500 for the semifinalists and $250 for quarterfinalists.
Sponsors for the four-race series includes FITTEAM Natural Nutrition, the Marcum Family, Champion Cooling Systems, Meziere Enterprises, Lamb Components, Aerospace Components, K&N Engineering, Crew Chief Pro, Taylor Motorsports, Mike’s Transmission, RaceTrans.com, and Mountain View Tires. Other race dates are July 15 and August 18 at Fontana, and a top ten race for the championship at Las Vegas on Nov 1. [05/16/18]
This weekend’s Platinum Fleet Repair Motorcycle U.S. Nationals at Atco Dragway in New Jersey has been canceled. With rain forecast for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the promoters wanted to give all racers time to change their plans.
This event will not be rescheduled. The next Xtreme Dragbike Association event will be the Summer Nationals June 22-24 at Virginia Motorsports Park. [05/16/18]
Keith Haney (left) and Rickie Smith. The car Haney will be driving was in Rickie Smith Racing colors for his licensing runs, but Kryptonite Kustomz in Broken Arrow, OK, was busy this week applying a unique, red-white-and-blue Summit Racing wrap.
“So, I had some challenges and made a couple of missteps starting out, but my lights were great and Rickie and his guys were really helpful in every way and I was able to get it done. I ended up going 6.23 at 190 miles an hour, which even though I shut it off early was still the quickest I’d ever been in a quarter mile. And then at night I ran again and again lifted a little too early, but that’s okay because I went 6.12 to satisfy my two passes for the NHRA license.” [05/16/18]
Tony Schumacher, the eight-time Top Fuel world champion in his U.S. Army Dragster for Don Schumacher Racing (DSR), hits Topeka second in the championship through the season’s first seven events but is coming off back-to-back first-round defeats at Charlotte and Atlanta.
A year ago at Topeka, he blazed to a track-record qualifying run of 3.660 seconds at 327.90 mph but could not get past second-round opponent Clay Millican in Sunday eliminations. In addition to his lone Topeka victory in 2010, he reached the final round in 2013, where he came up just short against that year’s Top Fuel champion Shawn Langdon.
“We’re just ready to go out there to Kansas and do our duty by getting one of those Wallys,” Schumacher said. “Topeka is a very nice track. It’s good, it’s fast, it’s clean, and it doesn’t have some of the issues we have at some other tracks. I think what’s good about that track is it almost always is a good, two-lane track where both cars will get down cleanly and it becomes a driver-crew chief thing rather than a racetrack issue in one lane or the other.” [05/16/18]
California’s Irwindale Speedway will have two drag racing opportunities this week. Thursday, May 17, will feature Drift and Drag Night with both the drag strip and the Burnout BOX open in the parking lot.
Saturday, May 19, the gates will open at 3 p.m. to give more time to drag race or burnout in the BOX. Trophies will be given to the fastest times of the night for Ford, Chevy, Mopar, Euro Import and Asian Import, as well as $100 cash for the largest smoke cloud in the BOX. [05/16/18]
"Super Dave" Adkins, who last year became the quickest LS-powered driver ever with a 3.94 aboard his 2,700-pound '63 Impala, outdid himself with his new Camaro, ripping off a 3.87 at nearly 200 mph at the Holley EFI Outlaw Street Car Reunion in Bowling Green, KY.
Adkins' 1970 Camaro is powered by a true inline-valve LS engine, a twin-turbocharged 427 cubic-inch powerplant with a billet Noonan block and billet Baker Engineering heads that's completely controlled by a Holley Dominator EFI system. Adkins qualified in the top half of a 16-car Radial Vs. the World field totally dominated by big-blocks – every other car in the field had a big-block under the hood.
Already knocking on the door to 200 mph, Adkins made his historic run in the opening round of eliminations and was gunning for 200 in the second round. A massive oil-down right before he ran eliminated any chance of hitting the double-century mark and knocked him out of the race, forcing him to lift early after blowing the tires off just off the line.
"It felt like I was driving on ice," he said. "All it needed was a couple more pounds of boost to run 200. It should definitely happen somewhere this year, and the potential is there to run in the .70s." [05/16/18]
At Topeka Antron Brown’s Matco Tools Top Fuel dragster will be encouraging fans to donate to the Fisher House Foundation as part of their Tools for the Cause promotion. Fisher House locations provide lodging for military veterans and their families while receiving medical care. [05/16/18]
The Agent was happy to see that the NHRA Museum is giving free entry to the Nostalgia Funny Cars and four crew members at the Holley Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green, KY, on June 14-16. But the Museum has not (will not?) announced what the payout will be.
The Agent must wonder how many teams can make the financial decision to haul car, driver and crew to Kentucky for four days (they must be there on Wednesday) without knowing what they are racing for? [05/16/18]
