RACE REPORTS
AGENT 1320
Jay Turner didn’t waste any time at Phoenix, setting the track ET record and track and national speed record with a first-round run of 6.193 at 237.75 mph in his Top Fuel Harley.
Turner’s first-round opponent, Tii Tharpe, shut off at the hit of the throttle. In the second round Turner had a decisive win by more than 100 feet over Winternationals winner Randal Andras. In the final, Rickey House moved 0.100 too soon and Turner coasted to the finish line. [02/24/20]
Jim Campbell’s Funny Car had an explosion and you would think that cost him the round, but, no. Opponent Robert Hight’s Funny Car shook the tires and he could not get it back in the groove. After picking up the pieces and replacing a windshield, Campbell lost to Jack Beckman in the second round. [02/24/20]
Coming off the Pro Stock win at Phoenix, Erica Enders returns to action at the Drag Illustrated World Doorslammer Nationals presented by CTech Manufacturing, which takes place March 6-8 at Orlando Speed World Dragway and will award the Pro Stock winner $75,000.
She will then race at the NHRA Gatornationals the following week at Gainesville Raceway. [02/24/20]
Matt Hagan had one of the more bizarre runs at Phoenix. In the first round opponent Jeff Diehl dropped a couple of cylinders off the starting line, but Hagan’s car made an unexpected turn into the timing blocks, disqualifying the run and giving the win to Diehl. Diehl then lost to Ron Capps. [02/24/20]
On Saturday at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park, near the end of the third round of Super Gas, Ryan Herem's Corvette was involved in an incident after the finish line. He was conscious and alert after the wreck, but the car suffered serious damage.
Due to the extended time necessary for cleaning up the track after the finish line, the balance of the night's eliminations were postponed until after the first round of pro eliminations on Sunday. [02/24/20]
Among those expected to compete this week is Joe Jolsrud, last year’s series champion in Top Eliminator.
This weekend’s (Feb. 29-March 1) opening race in the 2020 VP Racing Fuels Carolina Coalition Series presented by Hoosier Tires will be held at Rockingham Dragway. Hosting the opening event in the Coalition Series is a major change for the Rock, which traditionally has been the site of the season finale.
That event, the first of four in a series that also includes Mooresville Dragway, Piedmont Dragway and Farmington Dragway, will be followed by the track’s annual Racers Appreciation Free Entry Race (March 7-8). Both events will award points toward Rockingham Dragway track championships and ET Finals eligibility.
“It’s impossible any more to find a weekend when there isn’t a conflict of some sort,” said Rockingham owner Steve Earwood, “but we thought it would give everybody the best chance to check out the track if we ran a couple of races early, before everyone else opens for business. Plus, it’ll be a little cooler, more like what we can expect at the ET Finals (Oct. 15-18).” [02/24/20]
The radical triple jet engine “Home Wrecker” truck is driven by Jerry McCart.
The Florida-based jet racing series, the Festival of Fire, returns to South Florida with the only exclusively jet-powered competition event, on March 6 and 7 at Palm Beach International Raceway.
The competition will feature two jet dragsters of the Larsen Motorsports team driven by two-time IHRA Jet Champion Elaine Larsen and U.S. Marine Corps veteran Dewayne Hill. Lucas Oil Racing drivers Joe Zaccaro and Terry Rosberg will also be piloting jet dragsters.
Jet funny car pilots include siblings U.S. Army veteran April Crownhart-Swan and her brother, Danny Crownhart. U.S. Army Halo Skydiver Paul Sieli and Josh Krueder will also drive jet funny cars.
Before the jet light up the night on Friday, March 6, Blazing Trails, a non-profit educational outreach program, will again host a Friday morning field trip for students from Florida’s Palm Beach County. Students will explore the science of a jet dragster all while learning how STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) programs apply to the motorsports industry. [02/24/20]
