Ronny Young gets win in altered ‘Shockwave’

“Blue Max” AA/FC pilot Ronny Young stepped back into the “Shockwave” Saturday night, Aug. 19, during the Outlaw Fuel Altered Night of Fire held at North Star Dragway in Denton, Texas.

Young who began his funny car career at the wheel of the “Shockwave”, subbed for current owner, Bobby Marriot, who is recovering from a shoulder injury. With the help of former “Shockwave” partner, Terry Darby, it didn't take long for Young to fit right in the Altered style.

The three ripped off a 3.96 in the first qualifying round, and defeated another former All American Funny Car pilot, Jimmy Jones, in round one. The “Shockwave” gang then posted a 3.84 in the finals to defeat last year’s champion, Raymond Dawson, who posted a solid 3.89.

NHDRO World Finals set for end of September at Indy

DME Racing and Pro Stock Inc. have signed on as title sponsors of the NHDRO World Finals on Sept. 29-Oct. 1 at Lucas Oil Raceway Park near Indianapolis.

Since rain postponed the August race, there will be two complete Pro Street races in September in addition to the annual Pro Street Shootout. The Top Gas, Super Comp, Crazy 8s and Street Fighter classes also will be finishing their postponed August competition.

With the exception of Street Fighter, which John Markham has dominated all year, the other three sportsman categories have very tight championship battles going on as they head into the double-header season finale.

Pro Nitrous, Pro Open, and Pro Ultra are the other classes slated for the event. And, of course, grudge racing gets underway after the Shootout class on Saturday night.

Three generations of Gray family to compete at U.S. Nationals

Johnny Gray      Shane (near lane) and Tanner Gray

Tanner Gray has certainly had a successful rookie season, but when you consider where he comes from, you can understand why that might not be quite so remarkable. Grandfather, Johnny Gray, and father, Shane Gray, also were successful in NHRA Pro Stock racing over the years. Johnny has retired from active racing but Shane stills competes at selected events.

However, all three generations will all be driving at this year’s U.S. Nationals on the Labor Day weekend.

“It will be a lot of fun,” the youngest Gray said. “I get to race with my grandpa. I’ve got to race my dad over the years, but I’m really looking forward to that. Hopefully, we can give my grandpa a good car so he could go out there and win the thing. That would be cool.”

Eighteen-year-old Tanner seems practically a shoe-in for Rookie of the Year honors, and could even win the championship. He is in second place in the points going into the last race before the points re-rack for the six-race Countdown to the Championship.

“If you would have told me I would win four races my first year, I would have told you that you were crazy,” Tanner said. “We definitely have something going and it’s clicking at the right time.”
